National Semiconductor Corp. today announced that the company’s SolarMagic™ power optimizer received the renewable energy design award at the 7th annual Elektra Awards, on Tuesday, December 1st. Electronics Weekly and a panel of industry experts recognized National’s innovative design for its achievement in increasing the energy output and system effectiveness of solar arrays when challenged with real-world conditions.
The Elektra Awards, founded by Electronics Weekly in 2003, recognize the people, companies and products that demonstrate leadership in the electronics community. The candidates for the prestigious awards had to demonstrate how a hardware technology can be used to support the development renewable energy systems such as solar, wind or thermo. The entry should include a description of the product or system design highlighting its relevance to renewable energy systems, for example how it can improve efficiency or usability of renewable energy systems.
Judging criteria was the designs – performance, design flexibility and suitability for an application.
The performance potential of an array substantially decreases when affected by mismatch caused by problems such as installation variation, asymmetrical degradation and shading from tall structures and debris. These conditions lead to an overall reduction in effectiveness and energy production. Based on National’s analog and power management circuitry, SolarMagic power optimizers recoup up to 71 percent of the power lost.
“Mitigating power loss, increasing system stability and providing both users and installers with installation flexibility, SolarMagic provides an unparalleled solution to the issues affecting the performance of solar arrays,” said Ralf Muenster, Director, Renewable Energy Segment at National Semiconductor. “We are honored that SolarMagic is being recognized for the transformative nature of its design.”
